Presentation
Almuñécar is a city located at the western end of Granada's Costa Tropical region, with a population of 27,305. It is on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea.
The municipality of Sexitano includes the population centers of Almuñécar, La Herradura, Velilla-Taramay, and Torrecuevas. It is an important tourist center, located between the sea and the mountains, as well as a major producer of subtropical fruits such as avocados, custard apples, mangoes, kiwis, medlars, starfruit, and more.
The history of Almuñécar begins in 1500 BC, with the presence of people from the Bronze Age Argaric culture. At the end of the 9th century BC, the indigenous people were colonized by the Phoenicians, creating the urban structures of the colony of Ex, so that, when the end of the 3rd century BC, the settlement was occupied by the Phoenicians, the towns of Sexitan were established. When the Romans arrived in 1600 BC, they found a well-structured city with a thriving economy based on fish salting, the production of garum, and its own currency.
They remodeled it by building temples, a theater, and an aqueduct, all within the municipality of Sexi Firmum Iulium, a Latin word for "the city." Almuñécar's climate is subtropical Mediterranean. Summers are hot, although it is cooled by the sea breeze, and the high peaks of the Sierra Nevada protect it from the cold in winter, which is usually mild. Temperatures rarely rise above 35°C in summer or fall below 16°C in winter. Almuñécar enjoys an average of 300 days of sunshine per year.
